Ranpo Edogawa’s short stories have changed throughout the years – he started from detective fiction in style of Arthur Conan Doyle or Agatha Christie, only to move on to more creepy tales similar to those of Edgar Allan Poe (he borrowed his pen name from Poe – Edogawa Ranpo pronounced quickly sounds almost as Edgar Allan Poe). In his later years, Ranpo preffered to shock and freak out rather than solve mysteries. Together with translator Dariusz Latoś, we have chosen stories that perfectly present different faces to Edogawa.

Passion towards East Asian culture, especially literature

Our bookstore on Chmielna 12 street is a meeting place for everyone who loves Asia

Our newest books

Tajfuny is a curated bookstore. It means that we only choose to stock books that have fascinated and enchanted us.

In our online bookstore you will surely find great titles from across Asia. Every book is recommended by someone from our team – boring book descriptions copy&pasted from publishers’ websites is not our thing. We want to share our impressions and favourite quotes, because we want to make the online shopping experience as close to what you get when you visit our brick and mortar store in Warsaw.

Meet the author of the month

Osamu Dazai

Osamu Dazai (born Shūji Tsushima, 1909–1948), one of the most important authors of 20th century Japan. He has always been a prolific writer who has based a lot of his works on his own biography, creating works that have touched the hearts of readers that tried to find their place in post-war Japan. The protagonists of Dazai’s novels and short stories are people who have lost their way, without hope. Dazai often wrote in first person, almost identifying himself with people he wrote about, which makes it highly likely that he very well knew what they were dealing with.

After the suicide of his idol, Ryūnosuke Akutagawa, almost like Yōzo, the protagonist of No longer human (one o his most famous novels), he drowned his sorrows in alcohol, dropped our of university and started spending his time with prostitutes. For most of his life he has suffered from depression and was addicted to drugs and alcohol.

He had a very complicated love life. He attempted suicide four times, before the final, fifth one, ended in his death.
