Kerr provides numerous examples and splendidly illustrates the situations described, not relying solely on anecdotes. The author gives some advice on how to improve the state of affairs, so the overtone of the book isn’t entirely negative. Dogs and demons is a brilliant and authentic counterbalance for works idealising Japan.
