If They Come For Us

It’s been a while since I read such a wonderful collection of poems – some of them I had to go back to and reread a few times, or find some background information to better understand their context and wider meaning. Along with the author I searched for the sense of belonging in this world, in which we so quickly judge each other, even when (or maybe especially when) we don’t know each other.

In this collection you will find many autobiographical poems (about sexuality, being an orphan…), as well as those which reflect more universal experiences – about the painful experience of The Partition of India, about islamophobia in the United States, about the trauma related to 9/11 events. Ashgar poems are full of strong feelings: anger, pain, happiness, sadness… Thanks to those emotions, which she evokes with her words, the poems help us notice abuse and its various shades, which can impact many generations.

We reccomend it to Ocean Vuong’s poetry fans and fans of non-fiction bookssuch as We Have Always been here or Remnants of Partition.
