Queer Asia

As we continue to grow our collection of books that showcase the voices and perspectives of LGBTQ+ people, we were thrilled to get our hands on a more academic collection of essays – Queer Asia. This is an important book, although it is a demanding read, especially for people who are not used to academic style of writing. Even though 2/3 of the world’s population lives in Asia, we rarely look at the world from a non-European or non-“Western” perspective – also in feminist discourse or in broadly understood gender studies. Queer Asia is a book that attempts to change that.

Queer Asia is a collection of essays, which is the result of three conferences that took place in London in 2016-2018. The idea for the conferences was born out of frustration around how difficult it is to work on queer topics in an Asian context and how little room there is for a non-white narrative in the gender studies community. It was also created from the desire to decolonize the way we perceive the world and how we learn about it.

You will read about the stigmatization of non-heteronormative people from poor backgrounds in China, about beauty advertisements in South Korea, about queer themes in Filipino films, about the fight for intersex rights in the Chinese context, but also about feminist and queer themes from the perspective of West Asia.
