A genius novel about four sisters; a book comparable to The Leopard by di Lampedusa. The demise of the Makioka family and the glorification of the past is the main theme of the story. Tanizaki is a master storyteller, with his ability to portray changing of the seasons and the differences between Kansai and Kantō regions. The novel is set in the 1930s, a time when Japan was in its dynamic modernization era, but also has a universal and timeless appeal.
