Thousand Cranes

It’s an important work of Kawabata about desire and passion, saturated with melancholy. The symbolic aspect of the relation between the young hero and his late father’s ex-lover (and later, her daughter as well) can be interpreted through the lens of the changes happening in post-war Japan. It was then that social roles and patriarchy started being questioned, and there was a gradual departure from traditional rituals. In the book, the metaphor of these changes are numerous scenes referring to the tea ceremony. Thousand Cranes is a beautiful novel that approaches the subject of societal metamorphose in a multi-layer way.
