Cats by Kuniyoshi features a selection of works by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, one of the last famous woodblock print artist – and an avid cat lover. The works collected in the album seem to confirm this – his cats take on caricatured faces of theater actors, behave like people, and even accompany beautiful women on bijinga woodprints.. In the introduction, you can read an anecdote related to the burial of one of Kuniyoshi’s cats, told by the son of the artist’s apprentice.
Cats by Kuniyoshi is a unique bilingual (Japanese-English) album which encourages the reader to admire traditional woodprints, as if pne was in the old Edo. It was made in such a way that you can cut out your favorite prints from the book in order to study them carefully, to hang them on the wall or even to wrap a gift with them.
