In seven oneiric visions Ma Jian presents the image of a party official going through mental decay. The main character is regularly haunted by nightmares caused by the memories of brutal past events and the current wealthy status can’t silence his conscience.
Ma Jian paints the picture of a nation overpowered with consumption, blinded by materialism and ruled by violence and lies. The writer remains critical of the slogan “China Dream” promoted by the general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party, Xi Jinping, which was inspired by the myth of the American dream. “Chinese dream” turned out to be a capitalistic nightmare that only deepens social inequality and class division.
