Contemporary Japanese Posters

Contemporary Japanese Posters is a huge, beautifully published album collected by Gian Carlo Calza, an Italian professor of East Asian art history, whi is an outstanding authority in the field of Japanese art. The collection is introduced by 3 short essays: by the author himself, by Elisabetta Scantamburlo, who collaborated on the creation of the album, and by a graphic artist Satoh Taku.

On the album’s 500 pages, several hundred posters are presented, representing almost 70 years of the history of this medium, from applied works – art available to the general public, such as advertisements for Meiji chocolate or Nikon cameras – to unique works of artists exhibited in galleries and museums. Calza selected over 80 artists and a number of works from each of them; you will also find short biographies and mini-interviews about their work.

The posters allow you to understand the trends of contemporary Japanese art, largely based on the reinterpretation of traditional motifs and colors – but also playing with styles inspired by trends from abroad. We recommend it to all fans and creators of graphics and contemporary art – the album is a real treasury of knowledge and inspiration.
