In 2017 a journalist, Shiori Itō, publicly spoke that two years ago she was raped by a well-established journalist, Noriyuki Yamaguchi. Czarna skrzynka (eng. Black Box) is an honest record of her fight with the system – the hard and degrading police work and a legal battle that she was deemed to lose. It’s also a story about trauma and the lack of empathy that she received from society and her closed ones.

Itō’s book shook the public opinion and paved the way for the #MeToo movement in Japan. Besides the supportive voices, the author was also met with harsh criticism. The case didn’t end until 2019 when Itō won the civil suit against Yamaguchi.

Czarna skrzynka is not an easy read but it is inspiring as a proof that no matter what, it is worth fighting for the truth to come out. We can’t speak about contemporary Japanese feminism without Shiori Itō’s book

This edition includes an afterword written by Karolina Bednarz.
