Out of love for Japan, Kerr wrote a book about everything that doesn’t function properly in that very country — from the education system and the infantilisation of culture to politics, corruption, economy, no respect towards the environment, the hideousness of cities, and tourism. Kerr provides numerous examples and splendidly illustrates the situations described, not relying solely on anecdotes. The author gives some advice on how to improve the state of affairs, so the overtone of the book isn’t entirely negative. Dogs and demons is a brilliant and authentic counterbalance for works idealising Japan.
