“What bird is this feather from?” – one day Feather lying on the ground hears from passing children. And so its adventure begins. In order to find an answer to the question that has been bothering it ever since, it sets off on a journey carried away by gusts of wind. It asks every bird he meets the same question: Do I belong to you? On its way, it meets many species (including kingfisher, cuckoo, peacock), experiences a blood-curdling event, and finally, falls gently on the grass and meets … well, who?
As the author writes in the introduction: “I believe that a good picture book is close to philosophy.” A seemingly simple story, based on repetition, seems to pose a universal question about identity and belonging.
Feather is a collaboration between award-winning creators: Chinese writer Cao Wenxuan and Brazilian illustrator Roger Mello. Both Wenxuan and Mello were awarded the most prestigious award for authors of children’s literature – Hans Christian Andersen Award.
