Ghibliotheque is a comprehensive introduction to the world of Studio Ghibli animations. Although it is not an official guide, such as the Studio Ghibli Library series with introductions by Miyazaki himself, the authors are undoubtedly specialists in the subject – they even created a popular podcast.
Inside, there are chapters dedicated to twenty-four films, from the debut Nausicaa to 2020’s Earwig and the Witch. All of them are richly illustrated, and in addition to the quasi-reviews, you will find information about the inspirations, context and history of the creation of the films, annotated with statements by the creators themselves. Throughout the chapters, the authors also attempt a certain synthesis, trying to isolate characteristic features and recurring motifs or themes. Thanks to this apoproach, the album should appeal to both Ghibli fans and those who are just starting their adventure with the films and are looking for a guide to the iconic animations.
