This Japanese-English book allows us to familiarize ourselves with humorous illustrations and woodcuts from the Edo and Meiji periods. These caricatures and funny scenes served as the start of the manga, the Japanese comic book that is so popular all over the world. It is interesting how many of the old techniques and aesthetics still appear in modern comics today. We can find here the works of such masters as Katsushika Hokusai or Utagawa Kuniyoshi, but also no less interesting, less known in the West artists: Hanabusa Itchō, Sogi Shōhaku, Maruyama Ōkyo, Watanabe Kazan, Kawanabe Kyōsai and others.
The book can be interesting for comic book lovers, graphic designers and art historians, but also to anyone who would sometimes like to watch cheerful, but also intriguing illustrations.
