Between Collectivism and Individualism. Japanese Avant-Garde in the 1950s and the 1960s is a book published along with the exhibition of the same title that took place in Zachęta in Warsaw in late 2021 and early 2022. For the first time in Poland, this book presents Japanese avant-garde art of two decades, a period of great changes that resulted in the emergence of the Japan we know today. Although there are many photographs, painting reproductions and drawings, it’s not really an album but rather a complex guide full of substantive text dedicated to avant-garde movements and their history. It’s not an easy history though – the Japanese art was, from the very beginning, focused on collective work, not leaving much space for individuality and formal experiments. The authors of the essays included in this book will introduce the artistic groups, and independent artists, that live in the memory of art lovers. It’s a very interesting and important title as we don’t really speak about Japanese contemporary art in Poland but it deserves to be discovered!
