If I had to choose the best phrase describing New Retro Illustration, it would definitely be “eye candy.” This is an album of retro-style illustrations created by a young generation of Japanese artists. And indeed, each illustration is in the style of of the 80’s and 90’s. Full of neon lights, Polaroids, telephones with a spiral cable, vinyl records, walkmans and other relics of the old days. The most important role here is played not by the objects, but colors specific to those decades – from neons to pastels, in rich combinations and with a minimum amount of black.
New Retro is also the name of a style that has been gaining popularity since the 2000s, and this album is an attempt to collect the most interesting and promising illustrators of this trend. Thanks to this publication, young, (yet) unknown artists have a chance to reach outside Japan more easily, and this doesn’t happen often. I don’t know what is more exciting about this album: vivid colors, fresh outlook or retro atmosphere – but I know that it is impossible to tear your eyes away. I really haven’t seen something so mesmerizing (and colorful!) in a long time.
