Norie is twenty seven years old. She’s from Taiwan but left the country right after she had graduated from the university to search for some other, better place. She finds employment in a Japanese company, however, even here she has to navigate between worlds – corporate office life, the world of her girlfriends from lesbian bars in Shinjuku, memories from the traumatic past. She’s a lone dancer, spinning in darkness from which she can’t break free.
The debut novel by Li Kotomi is delightfully tender and poetic. The all-pervading sadness that pierces through pages, reminds readers of works written by cult Taiwanese author, Qiu Miaojin, who became an icon of her generation and the LGBTQ+ community. Li wrote a beautiful tribute to Miaojin sharing her own moving story.
