It’s been a while since a cookbook made me so happy! I suspected I would love it from the moment I saw that beautiful eggplant on the cover, but I didn’t expect it to become such a frequently used book in my kitchen.

Let’s start from the most important part – The Vegan Chinese Kitchen – (as the title suggests) it’s a vegan cookbook, so I can finally try my hand at recreating the dishes I tasted years ago in vegetarian buffets in China without having to figure out how to replace specific ingredients from recipes that I’ve found in other places. In addition to recipes, the author has prepared what I always appreciate cookbooks – an introduction with the most important ingredients and spices, which greatly facilitates planning your meals.

And there is a lot to choose from – eggplant in a “fish” sauce from the cover (yúxiāng qiézǐ) or in a steamed version with soy sauce and garlic (suànróng qiézǐ), recipes for vegetarian meat made out of yuba, fried bread-pockets with chives stuffing or fantastic sesame noodles (májiàngmiàn), absolutely ideal for summertime. And finally, some traditional desserts: sesame rice noodles or adzuki bean soup, which brings to mind Japanese oshiruko, but with a touch of sourness from the tangerine peel.

All the recipes are accompanied by photos of the beautifully presented dishes, and the more complicated recipes (for example, for fake-meat or dumplings) – also with step-by-step photos. Recommend for everyone, not only to veg(etari)ans.
