Bae Suah is certainly one of the most interesting voices on the South Korean literary scene. Each of her books is like a strange dream from which the reader cannot wake up and from which haunts for hours after returning to reality. Her style and outlook on the world – polyphonic, metaphoric, wrapped with specific aesthetics – are inimitable. And finally, we managed to make her work available in Tajfuny.
We follow a day in the life of the protagonist, Ayami, a former administrator of an audio theater for the blind. A day full of deja-vu, loops, repetitions, strange events which nevertheless seem to surprise no one around Ayami. The past and the future overlap, and Bae Suah also fills the novel with references to a world that, at first glance, does not match the Korean reality: there is a novel by Iranian writer Sadegh Hedayat, German lessons, there are references to Nanai shamanism (one of the ethnic groups inhabiting Siberia ). It creates something that is difficult to describe in words … only those who find the courage to let themselves be carried away on a literary journey full of hallucinations will feel this “something”.
