This is a book about rape culture – painful and very personal, because the author was a victim of gang rape in her teens. Each subsequent chapter is an attempt to understand – both the culture of rape in general and the depths of personal trauma.
Abdulali writes about more than just India – it is a universal book and a must-read for everyone, not only for women. The author touches such topics as marital rape, the struggles of men who have been victims of sexual violence, for whom there is very little support available, and the terrifying reality of countries where the best solution for the issue of sexual violence seems to be to arrange a marriage between the rapist and the victim.
