One of the first books describing Japan’s fascination with the West that had its peak in the 1920s and 1930s. The eponymous Naomi is a young girl preferring European clothes and the Western lifestyle. She’s contrasted with her older husband (the first salaryman in Japanese literature!) who values Japanese cuisine, fashion and entertainment more. However, out of love for Naomi, he attempts to fulfil her wishes and dreams. The novel presents the inevitable changes in Japanese society: the emancipation of women, development of office work culture and departure from certain Japanese values.
