A short story collection in a mastery translation by Bruce and Ju-chan Fulton. The book opens with “The Toy Shop Woman” – Oh’s debut. It’s a story about trauma and the way it conquers our lives. The narration move in bigger and bigger circles, until we start to slowly make sense of the unusal actions the characters decided to take. Most of the characters are housewives trapped in their current lives and dreaming of escape – at least for a short while. For some, art becomes a form of recluse, for others – night time walks or few bottles of soju.
Oh writes about womanhood, trauma and pain in a way that only few can compare to. She writes about etheral beauty, depression that makes us see the world as if through a mist. And relief that comes with time.
