For many, this novel is a metaphor of life as a trap. An entomologist searching in dunes for a new species of beetle must spend the night in a shelter cobbled together in a dug up hole in the dunes. A young woman living there spends most of her time collecting sand into buckets, which are then pulled out by people from a nearby village. In the morning, the man realises with horror that the ladder he used to go down the day before is gone and he’s trapped in a hole of sand. His attempts to escape are futile, and the sand is continuously filling up every crevice… Abe asks questions about the meaning of existence, approach to reality and our role in society. Hypnotising and masterfully written novel.
