The Factory is an endless site, almost a city, a whole ecosystem, full of manufacturing plants and never-before-seen plants and animal species. A three characters find themselves in this world – one is offered a job by the shredder, the other one is supposed to cover the roof in moss and the third one – every day proofreads the old documents… he narration switches from one character to another as we time travel along them and finally, we find ourselves trapped in this factory-city with a life of its own.

The Factory is a debut novella by the Japanese writer, Hiroko Oyamada, who received an Akutagawa Prize for her second piece – Ana (The Hole) in 2014. Right after the university graduation she switched between a few jobs (this experience inspired her to write The Factory) and finally she decided to become a full-time writer. Oyamada is considered one of the most unique voices in contemporary Japanese literature.

“All I could see was a meaningless arrangement of squiggles and dots, symbols and patterns, running on endlessly. Words are such unstable things.”
