The main character Mikumari is a teenager whose mother works as a midwife and runs a delivery room at home. Hence, from an early age, the sight of women giving birth is familiar to him; he also sometimes assists his mother in deliveries. The idea of children also appears in his own relationships with women. First, he is seduced by Anzu, a married and, unlike him, adult woman from the neighborhood.
Then he meets Nana, a school girl who represents everything you could wish for in a first love: attractive, funny, easy to fall in love with. It is also not difficult to imagine a future together. However, a certain innocence of this relationship seems unsatisfying to the boy.
In Mikumari, Misumi Kubo wonderfully describes the difficult path of finding happiness in another person, while also addressing the topic of growing up without taboos and romanticizing youth. It is a short story about entering adulthood, especially about discovering your own sexuality and attachment to another person.
