A small but unique beauty on the topic we get many questions about – that is, Japanese mythology / folklore. Although the text is in Japanese, apart from a short description on the booklet cover and the titles of works which are also provided in English, the most important thing in this mini-album is definitely the visuals. Scary Pictures of Ukiyo-e presents exactly what the title suggests: wonderful scary illustrations from the woodblock prints of the Edo period (1603-1867).
Over 250 pages of the book, illustrations are grouped into three thematic chapters: ghosts, apparitions and ghouls, and bloody scenes. Some are quite funny, like a cat monster made of smaller cats, or a spider demon, and some are really scary, like a laughing ghoul clutching a child’s head in its hand… Absolutely recommended for all horror fans!
