Zarządca Sanshō

The sixth volume of Tajfuny mini-series, in which we introduce works by male and female writers of the first half of the 20th century who had not been translated to Polish before, even though they deserve it.

This selection of three short stories perfectly captures the versatility of Mori’s artistic interests. The writer comes across as a scholar versed in European literature and art, and also a researcher of his native history and folklore. Besides that, he is an acute observer who easily creates both fascinating tales and intriguing miniatures. This volume includes three short stories translated by Katarzyna Sonnenberg-Musiał: Hanako, in which we can peep at Auguste Rodin working, spine-chilling Hipnoza, and the titular Zarządca Sanshō – one of the most known works written by Mori Ōgai. The story of a two orphans sold as slaves to the strict bailiff has been inspiring readers and other creators for years. And the brilliant movie from 1954 directed by Kenji Mizoguchi is the best proof of that.

Tajfuny mini-series was awarded by Polish Graphic Design Award 2020 in the category of: Publications (Fiction journalism, non-fiction) as well as received a special Arctic Paper 2020 prize. The series was also nominated for the Pióro Fredry Prize in 2020.
