We present you yet another amazing book for cat fanatics (and fans of Japanese art, of course) published by PIE. (You can see other cat-themed books here.) Cats in Ukiyo-e features a selection of works by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, one of the last famous woodblock print artist – and an avid cat lover.
There are 76 prints with bilingual descriptions (in Japanese and English), which are neither dry nor too theoretical, but full of interesting details and fun facts. The featured artwork is divided into curiously-named chapters, such as “Secrets of a Cat Painter” or “For Like-Minded Folks Who Need Only a Cat to Be Happy”. There is also a mini-selection of works which are not centered around cats: fish with human-like faces, frog actors or fish blowing soap bubbles …
In Cats in Ukiyo-e you will find more information and curiosities than in Kuniyoshi’s other album of cat-related artwork, in a slightly smaller and a very handy format. A perfect choice to cheer you up!
