A short essay full of references to Western and Japanese cultures – about the essence of Japaneseness in relation to aesthetics. Tanizaki is critical of both the blind imitation of Western models and the departure of the Japanese from many traditions and disregard for visual aspects in everyday life. Tanizaki’s simplicity of language and impassioned reasoning captivate from the very first page and allow the reader to notice things he hadn’t previously paid attention to, but which are the essence of how we live.
In addition to the titlular In Praise of Shadows, the volume also includes five other essays by Tanizaki and an afterword by the writer Junnosuke Yoshiyuki.
Available also in Polish and in English.
