Night is a selection of poems of Nepalese poet, Sulochanaa Manandhar, brilliantly translated by Muna Gurung. Night itself plays the main role, as Manandhar says in the introduction: “Many see night as a symbol of darkness, but I see night as a mother who gives birth to light.” The translator adds “To me, “Night” is especially about being a woman and finding n darkness a comfort that she is unable to find elsewhere, or in anyone.” The book is a perfect read just before going to sleep. Or in the middle of the night, when sleep eludes us – which is the exact liminal state Manandhar wrote her poems in.
