Sambal Shiok is a wonderful collection of over 90 recipes by Mandy Yin, a Malaysian living in London and running the award-winning restaurant of the same name. Full of retro photos and boasting a deep red cover, it is probably the most beautiful cookbook of 2021.
The book opens with an introduction about the culinary culture and flavors of Malaysia, you will also find a guide to the ingredients and equipment needed in every kitchen, and at the end – the author’s advice on where to eat when visiting Kuala Lumpur, Penang or Melaka.
From street food to homemade recipes passed down in the author’s family, everything looks incredibly appetizing. Following the clear instructions, you can easily prepare satay (several kinds!), the famous curry puffs, lettuce wraps with shrimp, Chinese style steamed fish, chicken with lemongrass… And of course, the specialty of the place: laksa, in curry and assam versions.
Everyone will find something for themselves here: soups, meat, salads, seafood, vegetarian dishes, and, to finish the meal, wonderful desserts.
